Lyric Hammersmith’s Dracula: A Gothic Horror Reimagining

Lyric Hammersmith‘s Dracula offers a fresh perspective on Bram Stoker’s classic tale, functioning as both a retelling and a sequel. The play, scripted by Morgan Lloyd Malcolm and directed by Emma Baggott, centers on Mina and Lucy, delving into their desires and fears within a Victorian context. The narrative unfolds as a cautionary tale, incorporating elements of re-enactment and blurring the lines between the stage and the audience. The production masterfully uses shadows, jumpscares, and subtle Gothic horror to create a chilling atmosphere. However, the play occasionally falters by explicitly explaining themes and character dynamics through monologues, potentially overshadowing the compelling performances, particularly Mei Mac’s portrayal of Lucy.
