Brockwell Park’s Beloved £1 Miniature Railway Adventure

The Brockwell Miniature Railway, a 7¼-inch gauge line operating within Brockwell Park, stands out as a remarkably affordable and cherished London attraction. Since its inception in 2003, overseen by the dedicated John Roberts, a return journey has remained frozen at just £1, with children under two travelling free when accompanied by an adult. This impressive price stability, coupled with a complete absence of strikes, offers a stark contrast to larger train operators. The railway provides a delightful, pint-sized journey for young families, shunting them between the platform by Herne Hill Gate and the famous art deco lido.

Roberts, who has driven the miniature trains for over two decades, notes some operational challenges, such as staff availability; he humorously mentions that often only two out of his four drivers turn up. The railway runs exclusively on Sundays from March through October, with services subject to cancellation during particularly wet weather. Despite these minor hurdles, the railway has become an integral part of the park’s appeal, offering a nostalgic nod to an earlier miniature line that ran the same route from the 1950s to 60s.

Looking ahead, there are exciting plans for the Brockwell Miniature Railway. Efforts are underway to construct a “teardrop” loop extension that will briefly detour through the woods, an addition anticipated to enhance their popular Halloween special. Furthermore, Roberts is keen to reintroduce Saturday operations, which have been absent for over a decade, expanding accessibility for visitors. The railway also offers unique benefits like being available for hire for children’s birthday parties. In 2024, the railway acquired a new locomotive named ‘Linda’, which took over duties from the Lil’ Jo steam engine ‘Oscar’, ensuring the continuation of this beloved community service.
