West London Orbital: Funding Boost for New Overground Line
The West London Orbital, a proposed new London Overground line, has taken a significant step forward with the recent agreement of a crucial funding deal. This ambitious project aims to establish a vital connection between Hendon and Hounslow, primarily by repurposing existing freight railway tracks. Once operational, the line is projected to introduce ten new interchanges with both National Rail and Tube services, dramatically enhancing connectivity across West London. Additionally, the plan includes the creation of four new stations, which will serve key residential and commercial areas such as Brent Cross, Neasden, and Acton, with trains running up to six times an hour.
A collaborative effort has seen Transport for London (TfL), alongside the London Boroughs of Barnet, Brent, Ealing, and Hounslow, and the Old Oak & Park Royal Development Corporation, jointly pledge “up to £6.65m” to propel the project into its next critical phase. This initial investment is earmarked for essential preparatory work, including the detailed design of stations and other necessary infrastructure, comprehensive modelling, and the initiation of a public consultation process. These steps are crucial ahead of a final decision expected in 2027. Despite the substantial nature of this funding, it constitutes only a fraction of the overall estimated costs, which were pegged between £430m and £610m in 2021, acknowledging the common challenge of infrastructure projects exceeding initial budgets.
Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, lauded the West London Orbital as a “missing link” in the capital’s public transport network, particularly for the north and northwest. He articulated the line’s immense potential to catalyze regeneration and foster economic growth, not only directly along its route but also throughout the wider city. Khan emphasized the project’s role in unlocking new homes, jobs, and diverse opportunities, contributing significantly to building “a better, greener, more prosperous London for everyone.” Should it gain approval, the line is anticipated to commence services in the early-to-mid 2030s, marking a transformative addition to London’s transport infrastructure.
