TfL’s ‘Cycling Idol’: Naming Bikes After Inspirational Women

Transport for London (TfL) has launched its “Cycling Idol” initiative, inviting the public to nominate inspirational women cyclists to have 10 of its cycle-hire bikes named in their honour. This campaign, set to culminate on International Women’s Day on March 8, 2026, aims to celebrate both famous athletes and unsung heroes who have made significant contributions or demonstrated exceptional spirit in cycling. Nominations are open until February 8, requiring an email to SantanderCyclesvote@tfl.gov.uk with a brief explanation of the nominee’s inspirational impact.

The primary benefit of this initiative is to encourage more women and girls to take up cycling in London. TfL acknowledges that despite recent growth in cycling across the capital—with 1.5 million journeys weekly, a 43% increase since 2019—the number of female cyclists remains significantly lower than male cyclists. Barriers such as concerns about road safety and the cost of bicycles often deter women. By spotlighting successful and virtuous female cyclists, TfL hopes to mitigate these deterrents and inspire greater participation, aligning with its broader ‘Equity in Motion’ initiative to enhance transport accessibility for everyone.

While some might dismiss the campaign as a mere “fluffy PR” exercise for TfL and its sponsors, the underlying objective is substantial. The initiative provides a platform to recognize figures like Olympic champions Victoria Pendleton and Dame Laura Kenny, as well as countless other women, including those from Wikipedia’s list of over 200 noted British female cyclists, or local community heroes who might otherwise remain uncelebrated. A panel of judges will select the winners, with professional cyclists chosen by majority vote and unsung heroes subjectively, ensuring meaningful recognition and preventing frivolous nominations like “Mrs Bikey McCycleFace.” This structured approach aims to genuinely foster a more inclusive cycling culture in London.
