London’s Top Baby Names 2024: Borough by Borough Breakdown
The Office for National Statistics has released the 2024 data on the most popular baby names in London, revealing interesting trends. Alexander reigns supreme, topping the charts in seven boroughs, a significant increase from the previous year. Meanwhile, Noah, a previous frontrunner, has completely disappeared from the borough-specific top spots, despite remaining the second most common name across all of London. Among girls' names, the letter ‘a' continues its dominance, with 26 out of 32 boroughs having a top name ending in ‘a'. Amelia's popularity exploded, claiming the top spot in 14 boroughs, a substantial rise from the previous year. Conversely, names like Sophie/Sophia/Sofia experienced a decline. Looking at London-wide figures, Muhammad remains the most popular name for boys, followed by Noah and Leo. Olivia takes the lead for girls, followed by Sofia and Amelia. While these top names show consistency with previous years, there are shifts in rankings and the emergence of new names in specific boroughs, highlighting the diversity within London's naming choices. The data underscores the subtle nuances in naming preferences across different London boroughs, even with only a few dozen registrations separating top names in each area. The data also reveals a slight increase in total births compared to 2023, but still below 2022 numbers.
