Hockney at 90: Tate Unveils Two Major London Exhibitions in 2027
London is set to continue its rich tradition of hosting David Hockney exhibitions with two significant shows planned for 2027, coinciding with the renowned artist's 90th birthday. These major events follow a current free exhibition, “David Hockney: A Year in Normandie and Some Other Thoughts about Painting,” at the Serpentine North gallery.
The first major announcement is a captivating multimedia installation scheduled for Tate Modern‘s iconic Turbine Hall in summer 2027. This free experience will bring to life Hockney's extensive designs for opera sets and costumes, created since the 1970s. These vibrant works will be dramatically projected onto colossal screens within the cavernous space, promising visitors a thrilling fusion of music and art in dynamic motion. The installation aims to offer an immersive and accessible cultural experience, leveraging the unique architectural grandeur of the Turbine Hall.
Concurrently, Tate Britain will host a comprehensive, paid-for retrospective simply titled “David Hockney.” Running from October 7, 2027, to February 20, 2028, this juggernaut exhibition will delve into seven decades of Hockney's prolific career. It will provide an expansive overview of his artistic journey, with a particular emphasis on exploring the “joys and complexities of love and friendship” as depicted throughout his diverse body of work. This retrospective is anticipated to be a deep dive into the themes and stylistic evolutions that have defined one of Britain's most celebrated living artists. The dual offerings ensure a broad celebration of Hockney’s legacy, from his theatrical contributions to his most personal reflections, making 2027 a landmark year for art enthusiasts in London.
