The annual Winter Toy Appeal, spearheaded by Jenna and Basil Fansa of the Local Buyers Club since 2013, is an urgent initiative dedicated to ensuring that children living in poverty across north and east London receive a new toy on Christmas Day. Now in its 12th year, the appeal aims to provide gifts for approximately 5,000 of the most deprived children, collaborating with local councils like Hackney and Haringey for effective distribution to families in critical need. To date, the appeal has successfully delivered over 37,000 new toys, bringing festive joy to thousands of young lives.

The profound benefit of the Winter Toy Appeal lies in its ability to counter the harsh realities of childhood poverty, where many families face severe deprivation, including parents sacrificing meals and living in substandard conditions. By providing a new toy, the appeal extends a crucial sense of kindness and community spirit, ensuring that the magic of Christmas reaches every child, regardless of their family's economic circumstances. Jenna Fansa emphasizes the stark contrast between children excitedly writing to Santa and the thousands in her community who are unlikely to receive any gift, highlighting the appeal's vital role in bridging this gap.

Despite its success, the appeal faces the challenge of meeting its increasing demand, issuing an urgent plea for donations before the 16th December 2025 deadline. The risk is that without sufficient contributions, they will be unable to fulfill the needs of all children referred to them, especially given that 64% of children in Hackney and 52% in Haringey live in income-deprived homes. Supporters can contribute by purchasing gifts online through independent toy shops or Amazon, or by donating via their Go Fund Me page, with a suggested gift value of around £15. Every donation helps spread happiness and ensures a brighter Christmas for a child in need.
