FKA twigs to Curate Southbank Centre’s 2027 Meltdown Festival
A Major Cultural Moment for London’s South Bank
The Southbank Centre has announced a significant milestone for its 2027 programming, with avant-garde artist FKA twigs confirmed as curator of the prestigious Meltdown festival. Running from 10th to 20th June 2027, this edition represents a major draw for music lovers and creative enthusiasts across London and beyond. The Southbank Centre’s location along Belvedere Road remains one of the capital’s most vital cultural destinations, hosting world-class performances and exhibitions that define London’s artistic identity. For those travelling from surrounding areas like Hounslow, Whitton, and Richmond, the venue remains easily accessible via public transport, making it a genuine community hub for the arts. FKA twigs’ appointment as the 32nd curator in Meltdown’s storied history places her among legendary predecessors including David Bowie, Patti Smith, and Yoko Ono. Her vision for the festival promises a celebration of collaborative creativity and genre-defying work—qualities that have defined her own innovative career. The curator has already signalled that her programming will reflect the diverse influences that have shaped her artistic journey, creating an eclectic line-up spanning multiple creative disciplines.
What Local Audiences Can Expect in 2027
FKA twigs’ Meltdown edition arrives alongside an impressive broader season at the Southbank Centre, making 2027 an exceptional year for cultural programming in the capital. Beyond twigs’ headline performance and festival curation, visitors can anticipate major exhibitions including a comprehensive Chris Ofili survey at the Hayward Gallery, marking a significant moment for contemporary visual arts. The Royal Festival Hall welcomes pianist Lang Lang for his first performance there since 2015, whilst internationally renowned theatre director Romeo Castellucci returns to British stages after a 16-year absence. Additionally, the centre will host celebrations marking Philip Glass’s 90th birthday and showcase world and UK dance premieres throughout the year. For local residents and regular visitors—whether commuting from Hounslow, Whitton, Richmond, or elsewhere—this programming represents unprecedented access to world-leading artistic talent and innovative creative work. The Southbank Centre’s deliberate emphasis on live, shared experiences addresses a genuine community need for meaningful cultural engagement. Early planning is advisable for those hoping to secure tickets to marquee events, particularly FKA twigs’ Meltdown festival, which is expected to attract significant interest from music fans and cultural observers nationally.
