Free “Passion of Jesus” Play Returns to Trafalgar Square
“The Passion of Jesus” is a significant annual theatrical event presented by Wintershall, a Surrey-based volunteer theatre company, in Trafalgar Square. Since its London premiere in 2010, this free live production has become a Good Friday tradition, attracting over 20,000 people to witness an epic portrayal of the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus. Staged twice on the day—90-minute performances at 12 pm and 3:15 pm on April 3, 2026—the play vividly depicts the arrest, trial, and crucifixion by the Romans, culminating in the miraculous resurrection on Easter Sunday.
The production boasts a 100-strong cast and ambitious staging, featuring scores of Roman centurions, branch-waving crowds, and the dramatic erection of three crucifixes. To enhance accessibility, the performances are mic-ed up with large screens around the square and include British Sign Language interpretation. A unique aspect of the show is the inclusion of live animals, such as Pontius Pilate's horse, George, a donkey named Chester, and doves, all handled by experienced professionals to ensure safety and comfort.
The play has garnered considerable acclaim, described as ‘electric' and ‘moving'. A notable recognition of its community value came in 2011 when Queen Elizabeth awarded the cast and crew the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service. While offering a powerful and immersive experience, the production includes a realistic depiction of the crucifixion, which the organizers caution might be too graphic for younger audience members. For those unable to attend in person, the performances are live-streamed on Facebook and available on YouTube afterwards. Attendees are advised to arrive about 40 minutes early due to anticipated crowds.
