London’s Fun Palaces: A Weekend of Free Community Events

London will host a series of ‘Fun Palaces’ from October 3rd to 5th, 2025, offering free community-led events celebrating creativity. Inspired by Joan Littlewood and Cedric Price’s 1961 concept of a ‘laboratory of fun,’ these pop-up events in various community spaces aim to be accessible to all, regardless of their background or usual engagement with the arts. Unlike inflatable castles, Fun Palaces offer diverse activities. Confirmed events include crafting, comedy, and circus for children in Bethnal Green; stitching and upcycling workshops in Telegraph Hill; bread baking and badge-making in Shoreditch; and Alpona, a Bengali folk art painting session, on the Isle of Dogs. The initiative aims to foster creativity and community engagement, providing a welcoming space for participation. While the program is still developing, the core concept of inclusivity and creative expression remains central. The risk is limited, primarily concerning event participation and resource allocation, while the benefits include community engagement, promoting arts appreciation, and enhancing social cohesion. These free events encourage diverse participation and celebrate creativity in various forms, making them a valuable community resource.
