Ralph Steadman: A Retrospective of Prints and Etchings
Ralph Steadman, the iconic illustrator known for his collaborations with Hunter S. Thompson and distinctive style, is showcased in a free exhibition, “Once Upon a Line.” Running from August 28th to September 21st, 2025, at The Muse Gallery in Notting Hill, the exhibition celebrates Steadman's career. The show features a range of works, including the original artwork for the cover of *Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas*, etchings of influential authors like George Orwell and Virginia Woolf, illustrations for *Alice Through the Looking Glass*, and never-before-seen pieces from his early career. Steadman's work is characterized by its anarchic, horror-tinged aesthetic, yet simultaneously beautiful and thought-provoking. The exhibition coincides with the 30th anniversary of the Portobello Film Festival, further highlighting Steadman's enduring impact on art and culture. The exhibition is free and offers a unique opportunity to explore the evolution of Steadman's artistic vision and his enduring influence on illustration. His journey, inspired by his mentor Leslie Richardson who encouraged printmaking, serves as a testament to creative exploration and the transformative power of art. Steadman's philosophy, “a mistake is an opportunity to do something else,” underscores his experimental approach and his ability to transform chaos into captivating imagery.
