Soho’s Festive Glow: Kids’ Creative Christmas Lights Shine Bright

The annual Christmas lights display in Soho presents a charming deviation from typical professional installations, instead featuring festive designs conceived by children from Soho Parish School. For the past five years, pupils from Great Windmill Street have collaborated with architect Antonio Capelao to create unique illuminations that adorn Great Windmill Street, Brewer Street, Berwick Street, and Dean Street. This initiative serves as a platform for young creativity, showcasing joyfully unconventional designs that range from a Christmas crab and a festive pineapple to interpretations reminiscent of a Minion or Jean-Michel Basquiat. The designs humorously demonstrate that simply adding a Santa hat can instantly make any object look Christmassy, challenging traditional notions of festive decor.

Beyond their whimsical appearance, these lights are imbued with significant themes. Through four days of intensive workshops, the children explore concepts such as ‘lighting,' ‘identity of place,' and, new for 2025, ‘women in Soho.' This process encourages pupils to uncover local stories, reflect on their own identities, and reimagine how light can dynamically transform public spaces. The result is not merely decorative but deeply thoughtful, with new panels each year joining previous creations to form an expanding collection.

Currently, 61 charming and meaningful light displays illuminate Soho, with six new panels added this year. This growing tradition fosters a strong sense of community and provides a unique, child-centric perspective on festive celebration. The initiative effectively engages local youth in civic art, empowering them to contribute visibly to their neighborhood's festive ambiance.
