Three New Free Art Galleries Coming to No. 1 Poultry
No. 1 Poultry, the distinctive City of London building, will house three new free art galleries starting September 24, 2025. This initiative, a collaboration between Hypha Studios and the Cheapside Business Alliance, aims to bring contemporary art to a wider audience. The galleries will feature 24 exhibitions over a year, showcasing works by exciting contemporary artists and curators. The inaugural exhibitions include ‘The Turn,’ focusing on suspension and disappearance, curated by Shakthi Shrima; ‘Blackhorse Lane Makers,’ a collaboration with recessed.space, featuring sculptural and immersive works by London-based makers; and ‘Material Actors,’ by the Binder of Women collective, inspired by No. 1 Poultry’s architecture. These exhibitions offer a unique opportunity to engage with contemporary art and potentially reconsider the building’s divisive architecture. The project presents minimal risk, being funded and supported by established entities, and offers significant benefits in terms of increased public engagement with art and the revitalization of the area. The free accessibility serves to broaden the potential audience and promote inclusivity within the art world. While the long-term effects remain to be seen, the initial launch promises a vibrant addition to London’s art scene. The galleries are expected to be a temporary installation, lasting for one year. The lack of specific details about the artworks leaves some anticipation for the exhibitions.
