White Storks Set for London Comeback? Rewilding Project Underway

Citizen Zoo, a rewilding group known for its beaver reintroduction project in Ealing, is exploring the possibility of bringing white storks back to London. While storks were once common in the UK but disappeared around 600 years ago due to hunting and habitat loss, recent successes in Sussex offer hope. The White Stork Project, which established breeding colonies at Knepp and Wadhurst Park, saw the first stork hatchlings in Britain since medieval times in 2020. This success fuels Citizen Zoo’s initiative. The group is currently conducting research to gauge Londoners’ opinions about the reintroduction and is identifying suitable habitats within the city’s green spaces and waterways. The feasibility of the project is supported by a significant increase in white stork sightings in London since 2016, rising from 27 in four decades to 472 in recent years.
