Bankside’s Frost Fair 2026: History, Fun & Winter Revelry Returns
Bankside is set to revive the historical tradition of the Frost Fair for the 21st century on Saturday, January 31, 2026, offering a vibrant, free celebration for all ages. Historically, between 1605 and 1814, the River Thames froze over numerous times, prompting Londoners to establish impromptu “Frost Fairs” on the ice. These carnival-esque events provided games, food, drink, shopping, and entertainment, transforming a halt in trade into a lively community gathering. The modern iteration aims to capture this entrepreneurial and festive spirit, serving as an ideal winter blues-buster.
Crucially, unlike its historical predecessors, Bankside’s contemporary Frost Fair takes place safely on solid ground, primarily in and around Borough Yards, eliminating any risks associated with a frozen river. The event draws inspiration from Bankside’s rich riverside heritage, featuring a diverse program of street performances, traditional games like hoopla, live music, and crafting activities designed to bring history to life. Visitors can expect to encounter “Frost Fair Folk,” roaming performers embodying the melting pot of characters who once frequented the ice, alongside a massive elephant puppet, a nod to a real elephant that crossed the Thames during the 1814 fair.
The fair offers a wealth of engaging activities for both children and adults. Family-friendly options include free winter-themed face-painting and drop-in art workshops where kids can doodle with Samme Snow, make elephant masks with Alice Clarke, or craft paper crowns with Rosie Brooks. Adults can participate in a discounted winter wreath-making workshop with MYO Creative, crafting their own festive decor. The iconic Golden Hinde also hosts various arts and crafts, such as paper lantern making and Tudor coin rubbings, alongside object handling and a dress-up corner. For those seeking historical insights, Mr Londoner offers a walking tour (waitlist available). Additionally, attendees can enjoy special food and drink offers, including Frost Fair-inspired hot chocolate and gingerbread, discounted hot drinks at MAM, and free live folk music at local pubs like The Gladstone Arms, ensuring a truly comprehensive midwinter revelry.
